Office-based general anesthesia is available for any surgical procedure. It is most commonly performed with wisdom teeth extraction, but a patient may elect for general anesthesia for simpler procedures too, depending on his or her level of anxiety. An IV is established, and various medications are infused to provide sedation, analgesia (pain inhibition), and amnesia. Patients quickly fall asleep, are unaware of the procedure as it is performed, and will not recall the procedure upon waking up. Patients breathe on their own throughout the procedure, receiving supplemental oxygen through the nose, all while connected to continuous vital sign monitors to ensure the utmost of safety. After the procedure, a short recovery period is necessary before patients are brought home by their family or friends.
