What should I do before I reach the dentist?
Knocked-out permanent tooth
Pick up the tooth by the white crown, not the root. If it is dirty, gently rinse it without scrubbing or removing attached tissue. When possible, carefully place it back into the socket without forcing it. If that is not possible, keep it moist in milk or a tooth-preservation solution. Call us immediately. Do not place a knocked-out baby tooth back into the socket.
Chipped, cracked or broken tooth
Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. Save any pieces you can find and apply a cold compress to the outside of the face if there is swelling. Avoid chewing on that side and call us for an evaluation.
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm water and gently floss around the tooth in case food is trapped. You may take an over-the-counter pain reliever if it is normally safe for you and you follow the product directions. Do not place aspirin directly against the tooth or gum.
Swelling or suspected dental abscess
Call us the same day. Dental infections do not usually resolve without treating the underlying cause. Do not attempt to drain or puncture an abscess yourself. Seek emergency medical care if the swelling is rapidly increasing or interfering with breathing, swallowing or speaking.
Lost crown or filling
Save the crown or restoration if you still have it. Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. Temporary dental cement may protect the area until you are seen, but do not use household glue or force the crown back into position.
Soft-tissue injury or bleeding
Gently rinse the area and apply firm pressure with clean gauze. A cold compress may help reduce swelling. If bleeding is heavy or does not stop, seek emergency medical care.
